Controlling the temperature of nanoscale quantum systems is becoming increasingly important in efforts to develop thermal devices such as heat valves, engines, and refrigerators explore fundamental concepts thermodynamics. In practice, however, it challenging generate arbitrary time-dependent temperatures, similarly what has been achieved for electronic voltage pulses. To overcome this problem, we here propose a fully mechanical scheme control environment an open system. end, consider collection harmonic oscillators that mediate interactions between system reservoir, show how effective can be realized by modulating oscillator frequencies time. By doing so, apply pulses system, cooled below environment. Surprisingly, using only few oscillators, our proposal thereby paves way controlling systems.
